OUR EXPERIENCE: Asking for Answers

“Should I be concerned about the size of my son’s penis?” [was] a thought that frequently crossed my mind. He was about six months old when I began noticing the lack of growth. It wasn’t something I felt comfortable researching or talking about, and it was difficult to actually express concern to the pediatrician. I mentioned it to my son’s pediatrician at his six-month well check, and the question was completely avoided. I let it go at the time but knew I needed to ask. We asked at the next well-child appointment and it was avoided again. At about twenty months we met with an endocrinologist who was willing to acknowledge our concern. She examined him and acknowledged that my suspicions were correct and my son had fallen behind on the penile growth scale. I was relieved, and we immediately began speaking about treatment. We decided to do testosterone therapy in the form of three monthly intramuscular injections to increase his penis size. Within a few weeks we were able to see [a] difference in the size, and a growth spurt was very obvious. No side effects had presented, and after the second dose, there was no longer a concern.
